Leadership Osceola Environment Day - February 27, 2013

Leadership Osceola is administered through Community Vision. Leadership Osceola is a leadership development program for current and upcoming leaders in the Community. The program focuses on 5 different subjects such as environment, economic development, community planning/vision, arts and culture. The City of Kissimmee Public Works Department participated in Leadership Osceola Environment Day on February 27, 2013.
Environment Day is a large effort and coordination through many different government agencies such as Osceola County, Reedy Creek Improvement District, City of Kissimmee, Osceola Historical Society, South Florida Water Management District, Toho Water Authority, and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
The day was packed full with nature walks, environmental presentations, a canoe experience, tour of the Kissimmee Lakefront and a boat ride on Lake Toho. During this Environmental day the attendees learn about the environmental issues and concerns facing their community, such as; recycling, water pollution, water supply, flood control, conservation of land, aquatic weed control, endangered species, etc. They also learn how the government agencies must work together for one common goal, to preserve and conserve the environment and its resources. Click here to see photos.

National Public Works Week

Each year in mid-May the City of Kissimmee Public Works Department participates in the National Public Works Week. During this week, displays are set up, featuring each of our divisions: Engineering/Construction, Sanitation, Stormwater Engineering, Stormwater, Streets/Sidewalks, and Weld Shop. While learning about Public Works the visitors can pick up give-away items from each display booth.

School of Government (SOG)

Once a year, Public Works and Engineering participates in the SOG. This is an 11-week educational program offered to residents who live within the Kissimmee City limits. The goal of the program is to provide residents with an opportunity to learn more about their local government through hands-on activities as they visit each City department. SOG is managed by the City's Public Information Office.

Education in the Park

Coordinated by the Parks & Recreation Department this event takes place at the Kissimmee Lakefront. The Public Works & Engineering Department offers equipment demonstrations, informational booths and activities for children.

National Engineers Week

National Engineers Week, founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), is a formal coalition of more than 70 engineering, education, and cultural societies along with more than 50 corporations and government agencies. This coalition is dedicated to raising public awareness of engineers' positive contributions to our quality of life. Engineers Week promotes recognition among parents, teachers and students of the importance of a technical education and a high level of math, science and technology literacy. This is also an opportunity to motivate youngsters to pursue engineering careers in order to provide a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce.
