FEMA Floodplain Program Overview

The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is a federal program established by Congress in 1968 which enables property owners to buy flood insurance at reasonable rates in participating communities. In return, participating communities carry out flood management measures designed to protect life and property from future flooding.

The City of Kissimmee also participates in The Community Rating System (CRS) which is a program implemented by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to reward communities such as the City of Kissimmee which undertake floodplain activities beyond the requirements of the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). The CRS is a point system program; the greater the number of points earned by a community the greater the reduction in flood insurance premiums for the citizens of that community.
