City Receives 7th Playful City USA Community Designation
The City of Kissimmee is being honored as a 2017 Playful City USA Community by national non-profit KaBoom!. This award marks the 7th time the City of Kissimmee has received this designation.
Playful City USA honors cities and towns across the country for putting the needs of families first so kids can learn, grow and develop important life skills. These communities are transforming ordinary places into playful spaces and using play as a solution to the challenges facing their residents. The 2017 Playful City USA recognition includes 258 communities from across the nation that offer a total of more than 14,000 safe and engaging play spaces that serve more than 4 million kids.
The City of Kissimmee is home to more than 20 parks and recreation areas, including the award-winning Kissimmee Lakefront Park on Lake Toho. The City of Kissimmee’s progressive park system includes a civic center, multiple community centers, a water park, skate park, numerous athletic fields and courts and the Shingle Creek Regional Park that offers historical structures for viewing, hiking and biking trails, fishing and an active blue way for kayaks and canoes.
Through the development of local action plans designed to increase the quality of play for residents and guests, the City of Kissimmee is committed to help the community become more playful in one of its 15 playgrounds. “We believe in creating community spaces that are all inclusive, such as Mill Run Park, which is the first publically accessible boundless playground in Osceola County” said Liz Harris, Director of Parks & Recreation for the City of Kissimmee.
Playful City USA honorees are taking action to ensure kids have great places, increase physical activity and have fun for all kids. Harris also added that “Kissimmee offers leisure opportunities designed for anyone with physical, developmental, cognitive and sensory disabilities and that’s one of the many reasons why our team is proud to be designated as a Playful City USA Community again.”
“We are thrilled to recognize the City of Kissimmee for putting kids first,” said KaBOOM! CEO James Siegal. “The well-being of our communities starts with the well-being of our kids, and play is critical for them to thrive. It is our collective responsibility to ensure that all kids get the childhood they deserve filled with play.”
